Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Premier Clark in Asia promoting investment for $175 billion LNG industry

B.C. Premier Christy Clark is in Asia this week shaking hands to speed LNG investment worth a mind-boggling $175 billion according to a new provincial figure.  That's enough for 15 Northern Gateway oil pipelines, by comparison.

The list of projects is staggering.  18 LNG export terminals are planned, 9 natural gas pipelines, and 100,000 jobs promised for "150 years" of prosperity.

The latest assessment commissioned by the Province looked at a scenario of five LNG plants constructed in B.C. between 2015 – 2024. This would create a total investment of $175 billion, said the Ministry of Natural Gas Development on Thursday.

Yet many are questioning if this massive industrial transformation for B.C.'s north and coastal areas are well understood.  What will be the environmental impacts to B.C.'s air and watersheds?  What will be the huge increase in greenhouse gases if billions of cubic metres of fossil fuels are pumped out of the earth per day and burned in Asia?  Lastly, how are First Nations rights and title being addressed in this LNG push?

The Vancouver Observer will continue to follow this important story.
