Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

RCMP Fatally Shoot Pigeon Lake Man; ASIRT Investigates Third Incident In One Week

Two men in Alberta have died in separate incidents involving RCMP officers.

A man from Pigeon Lake has died after a shooting involving an RCMP officer, causing the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate its third incident in three days.

Another man who was tasered by Leduc RCMP on Friday has also died, CBC Edmonton reports.

On Saturday around 9:30 p.m., a Wetaskiwin RCMP officer pulled over a vehicle for an impaired driving investigation near Ma-Me-O Beach, said RCMP in a statement.

An altercation ensued, and the RCMP officer resorted to his sidearm, shooting two people, the statement adds.

A 30-year-old man was fatally shot while a 41-year-old, also from Pigeon Lake, was transported to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The incident has been reported to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), who were on scene and will conduct an independent review.

In a second incident, an Alberta man was sent to hospital on Friday with life-threatening injuries and died, after he was tasered by Leduc Mounties.

The 27-year-old man was a suspect in a series of assaults, theft of automobiles, driving complains and hit-and-runs, said Leduc RCMP in a statement.

RCMP located him at a Petro-Canada gas station near 50 St. and 50 Ave. in Leduc, where a physical altercation occurred, including the user of a Taser. Soon after, officers noticed the man was in medical distress and he was transported to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition.

In a third incident, a suspected impaired driver, Curtis Hallock, was shot and wounded by Alberta Mounties. He was identified as a regular character on the reality TV show "Mantracker."

RCMP have released few details about the shooting, but they have said two officers were trying to pull over a vehicle on Thursday night in Grande Cache. A confrontation ensued and a man was shot.

He fled, but was caught a short time later and taken to the local hospital.
