On Wednesday, British soldier Lee Rigby was reportedly beheaded near the Royal Artillery Barracks by men believed to have been Islamist extremists.
Just a day later, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney took to Twitter to remind followers what the Liberal leader said shortly after the terrorist attacks in Boston last month.
“I hope Just Trudeau et al don’t think the obscene act of hateful violence in the UK was due to “someone who feels completely excluded,”” Kenney wrote.
“After Boston, Mr. Trudeau said “our approach has to be, OK, where do these tensions come from?” Should we have same approach to UK attack?”
In an interview with CBC’s Peter Mansbridge shortly after the bombings, Trudeau said examining the causes of terrorist attacks are important amid the security response.
"We have to look at the root causes," Trudeau said. "Now, we don't know now if it was terrorism or a single crazy or a domestic issue or a foreign issue.
"But there is no question that this happened because there is someone who feels completely excluded. Completely at war with innocents. At war with a society. And our approach has to be, where do those tensions come from?"
Conservatives pounced on Trudeau’s remarks as proof that he is unprepared for leadership.
Stephen Harper was quick to take a thinly veiled shot at Trudeau while in England to attend Margaret Thatcher's funeral.
"When you see this type of violent act, you do not sit around trying to rationalize it or make excuses for it or figure out its root causes," Harper said.
Tory MP Pierre Poilievre was even more direct in his mockery.
“The root causes of terrorism is terrorists,” Poilievre told CBC’s Power & Politics.
