Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

All the posts here were published in the electronic media – main-stream as well as fringe, and maintain links to the original texts.

US denies it asked feds for help with missile shield

OTTAWA - The U.S. government says it hasn't asked for Canada's help to beef up its ballistic missile defence shield.

"There have been no offers, proposals or recent discussions with the Canadians about a ballistic missile defence shield," defence secretary spokesman Bill Speaks said Monday.

He said Canada is regularly consulted about missile threats as part of its role with NORAD.

Canadian officials were playing coy about reports the Americans asked Canada to chip in to shore up their ballistic missile defence shield in the wake of bellicose threats from North Korea.

"Canada has declined to participate in ballistic missile defence in the past," National Defence spokesman Jay Paxton said Monday.

"We constantly review the security situation internationally."

It was a line parroted by Defence Minister Peter MacKay during question period Monday, when the NDP asked him about the reports.

Canada turned down an offer to participate in the program in 2005. The U.S. recently announced it would add 14 new missile interceptors in Alaska to boost the shield.
